Greetings Fellow Seekers,
First off I wanted to send my salutations from the West coast of the US. I was sad to miss you this weekend and am looking forward to hearing your voices when the teachings are uploaded. I'm also looking forward to connecting when we gather together when the days are longer and the weather is warmer.
My question is about your thoughts on the role of Interfaith ministers and religious rites. Today is Ash Wednesday and there are many Christians receiving the imposition of Ashes to mark the beginning of the Lenten season. In interfaith settings such as hospitals and prisons, what is the role of an Interfaith minister with this rite? Can an interfaith minister impose ashes? Is it better for an exclusively Christen to offer this rite if they are available?
What about other rites such as baptism? What about a brisk? Or a pipe ceremony? An Initiation of some sort? Anointing of healing oils?
To me it seems there is a line to the rites which our ordination authorizes us to lead and when that authority ends. What is your sense of that line? Why is it there and not somewhere else? What is your own personal comfort level?
I am particularly curious about what our teachers and elders at TNS think although these questions have been fruitful reflection for me and so I invite us all to consider and share if you are called.
Excited to hear your thoughts if there is time in your busy lives to share them...
Blessings of the dust from which we all come and to which we will return,
Claire
